Launch of Main PCR 2025:03 for Food and Beverage

The newly released main PCR 2025:03 for food and beverage establishes sector-general rules for developing EPDs in the food and beverage sector. Complementary PCRs (c-PCR) will be developed to address product-specific requirements for sub product categories.

The Secretariat is pleased to announce the release of main PCR 2025:03 for food and beverage on 14 July 2025.

This new main Product Category Rules (PCR) will establish the overarching and sector-general rules for developing EPDs across all food and beverage product categories. The main PCR enables the development of EPDs to be based on a declared unit, ensuring consistency and comparability across the sector.

To accommodate the diverse nature of food and beverage products, complementary PCRs (c-PCRs) will be developed to provide more specific requirements. These c-PCRs will allow EPDs to be developed based on functional units, offering a more detailed and functional perspective for specific product types.

This structure of a sector-wide main PCR and c-PCRs for specific product groups will enhance clarity, flexibility, and methodological robustness in the environmental communication of food and beverage products.

As part of this development, some of the 27 existing PCRs for specific food and beverage products will gradually be updated and aligned under this new framework as c-PCRs. During this transition period, existing PCRs that are valid must continue to be used for their respective product categories until the updates are completed.
