New default list of indicators for non-construction products released

March 29,2022 we released our new set of default indicators for non-construction products.

The new default set includes all the impact indicators of EN 15804, which will increase harmonization between EPDs of construction and non-construction products.

The new and the old default sets will be valid in parallel during a transition period ending December 31st, 2022. To not interfere with ongoing EPD projects.
Our recommendation is, however, to use the new deafult set when initiating new EPD projects.

Compared to the current indicator set, the new set:
1. changes the characterisation factors for the climate indicators due to the introduction of climate-carbon feedback effects, 2. (re)introduces the ozone depletion indicator (in kg CFC 11 eq.), 3. changes the acidification indicator (to accumulation exceedance in mol H+ eq.), and 4. replaces one single eutrophication indicator with three new eutrophication indicators: aquatic freshwater (kg P eq.), aquatic marine (kg N eq.), and terrestrial (mol N eq.).

Further, the six energy-use inventory indicators of EN 15804 will be mandatory, and the remaining 11 inventory indicators will be optional. The current inventory indicators were already adopted from EN 15804, so the change here is that eleven inventory indicators are removed as mandatory, thereby reducing the number of indicators that must be declared in the EPD.

We will in the upcoming update of the GPI clarify the procedure for future revisions of the default set of indicators, so that a revision shall be considered (but not necessarily done) every second year and that any future revisions shall specifically consider method developments for missing areas of concern (e.g., toxicity) as well as a global perspective.

As a global program operator, it is important for us to align with, and be responsive to, global developments of standards and methods. Also market stability is important, so we will not make frequent or drastic changes without any good reason and careful reflection of consequences.
