IPCVA, INTI and INTA will work on the determination of environmental impacts in Argentine beef according to the International EPD System
INTI | Hub EPD Argentina An agreement was signed in 14th March at the Argentina Beef Promotional Institute (IPCVA) headquarters by President Juan José Grigera Naón, INTI (Hub EPD Argentina) President, Ruben Geneyro and INTA Vice-President Naira Muñoz.
There is a growing interest of consumers worldwide in the environmental performance of products, particularly in the case of food. The technical proposal to be developed -which is the first worldwide experience- considerate the modeling and analysis of both the primary production system, as well as the industrial and consumption systems, also including logistics and transportation, understanding the life cycle analysis from the cradle to the grave for beef boneless, refrigerated and vacuum packed in compliance with EPD’s product category rules (PCR).
A total number of 28 industrial establishments and 84 primary production establishments, representative of all the productive regions of the country, will participate in the project. Knowledge of environmental impacts will allow the different actors in the value chain to design and execute actions aimed at their reduction and also to register their environmental declarations with Argentina’s EPD Hub (INTI) in the future.
Ruben Geneyro, INTI President, explains that sustainability and environmental accounting are of growing importance: consumers demand more sustainable products and rigorous information, companies demand environmental information from their suppliers and governments use accounting environment to protect their markets. In this context, at INTI we consider that the Life Cycle Analysis and the Environmental Product Declarations are tools of great value to increase the competitiveness of our industry by improving its environmental performance with objective, scientific and reliable communication.
This project to be developed by INTI and INTA, with financing from the IPCVA, is of strategic importance for Argentina, given that the possibility of having information on environmental performance is key to the construction of new pillars of competitiveness that strengthen the prestige of the Argentine beef in the foreign markets.
