International EPD System Reaches 20,000 EPDs and 3,000 Clients Worldwide

The International EPD System has reached two major milestones, surpassing 20,000 published Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and reaching 3,000 clients worldwide in Q1 2026.
Since the publication of its first EPD in 1998, the International EPD System has experienced steady and increasing rapid growth. Driven by increasing regulatory requirements and market demand for transparent environmental information, the number of EPDs has expanded significantly, particularly in recent years.
Following the milestone of 10,000 EPDs in fall 2024, the system has now doubled that figure in less than two years. This achievement reflects the continued trust of clients and the strong engagement of stakeholders, such as LCA consultants and Licensees, across the globe.
Amongst the 20,000+ EPDs, construction products continue to dominate, accounting for approximately 90.3% of all published EPDs. Beyond the construction sector, key product categories include food and beverages (19.3%), metal, mineral, plastic, and glass products (17.6%), paper and plastic products (12.6%), chemical products (12.5%), textile, footwear and apparel (11.9%), and machinery and equipment (11.7%).

Geographically, the largest shares of the 20,000+ EPDs originate from Italy (16.6%), Australia (16.1%), Sweden (10.3%), Spain (5.0%), and Turkey (4.6%). The largest share of EPDs published through licensees in the International EPD Systems are EPD Australasia (17.9%), EPD North America (4.6%), and EPD Türkiye (4.5%).

The 20,000th EPD has been issued to Dynamon Easy 31, an acrylic-based admixture for ready-mixed concrete, registered as EPD-IES-0028979:001 and manufactured by Mapei UK Ltd. The milestone of the 3,000th client is marked by Nippon Paint Decorative Coatings (Thailand) Co., Ltd. with 4 issued EPDs in digital format on emulsion paint products.
The rapid growth in EPDs is also closely linked to the increasing use of pre-verified tools. These, including fully pre-verified EPD tools, pre-verified EPD tools, and pre-verified LCA tools, account for 10.3% of all EPDs developed within the International EPD System, underscoring the growing importance of digitalisation and automation in streamlining EPD development processes.

“This continued growth reflects the increasing demand for, and trust in, the International EPD System to deliver credible and transparent environmental data. At the same time, we are scaling up our capacity through fully pre-verified tools to accelerate EPD development process without compromising quality,” says Sebastiaan Stiller, CEO of the International EPD System.
The Secretariat extends its sincere appreciation to all clients and stakeholders for their continued support and remains committed to further enhancing its services to deliver credible, transparent environmental data in support of clients’ sustainability efforts.
