Verified Environmental Data in a World of Increasing Climate Requirements

This article, published in Svenska Dagbladet (SvD), examines how the true climate impact of a product can be assessed as climate requirements and customer expectations continue to accelerate. In a time when transparency in climate-related information is increasingly critical, ambition alone is no longer sufficient—robust, verified data is required.
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are the industry’s most credible instruments for showcasing the climate and environmental impact of products. An EPD represents an investment in quality-assured life cycle data that can be applicable across multiple climate assessments—supporting compliance with regulatory requirements, such as the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and Digital Product Passports (DPP), in the procurement processes and when having dialogues with customers and investors.
“An EPD substantiates all environmental claims regarding a product’s or service’s environmental performance.”
Demand for reliable product data is growing rapidly. Customers, public authorities, and financial sectors increasingly require clear, comparable, and transparent information—often delivered in different formats. EPDs provide a standardised and third-party verified foundation that simplifies compliance and ensures continued relevance as sustainability reporting becomes the norm.
EPD International, with its headquarter in Sweden and a global reach, founded the EPD system nearly 30 years ago. This Swedish innovation now facilitates international trade and enables better-informed decision-making across the construction, real estate, and infrastructure sectors.
