This document will provide Product Category Rules (PCR) for the assessment of the environmental performance of technical ceramic grains and powders, and the declaration of this performance by an EPD.
This PCR will not cover products used in the construction sector (which are insteadcovered by PCR 2019:14).
Technical ceramic grains and powders are engineered for specialised applications that demand advanced material properties and they differ from ceramics used for construction (e.g., ceramics tiles) due to their more technical applications. They are valued for their exceptional performance characteristics, including high hardness, resistance to corrosion, thermal stability, and unique electrical properties.
Technical ceramic grains and powders face similar LCA challenges related to allocation, internal material flows, and recycled content calculation, so it is relevant for them to follow the same PCR rules.
Most plants produce a diverse range of finished or intermediate products that serve variousapplications. The following is a non-exhaustive list of these applications. Theirtypical applications include:
- Abrasive materials used in surface treatment processes (e.g., shot blasting).
- Polishing slurries for wafer production.
- Components for conductive ceramics and anti-wear coatings.
- Raw materials for industrial consumables.
- Additives for high-performance ceramics used in sensors, membranes, and filtration systems.
The product category corresponds to subsets of the the following UN CPC subclasses
- 37960: Other non-metallic mineral products n.e.c., including artificial corundum.
- 37291: Ceramic wares for laboratory, chemical, or other technical uses.
The scope of the PCR may be adjusted based on feedback received in the PCR development process.
