TMT Bars, Bhilai Steel Plant- Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL)
Thermo-Mechanically Treated (TMT) Bars are high-strength reinforcement steel products used primarily in reinforced concrete structures requiring high load-bearing capacity and ductility. The TMT bars covered under this Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) are manufactured at Bhilai Steel Plant using an integrated steelmaking route and comply with IS 1786, Fe-500D, FE-550D, SeQR-500D, SeQR-550D, HCR-500D, HCR-550D, FE600 or equivalent international specifications and standards. Production involves hot rolling of steel billets followed by thermo-mechanical treatment, including rapid quenching, self-tempering, and controlled atmospheric cooling. This process results in a hardened outer layer with a ductile core, providing an optimal combination of strength, elongation, and toughness. Modern TMT Bar mills are equipped with automated quenching systems, online dimensional and rib-pattern monitoring, and product traceability systems to ensure consistent quality. TMT Bars are widely used in buildings, bridges, transportation infrastructure, industrial structures, and large-scale construction projects. From a life cycle perspective, TMT Bars offer long service life and high recyclability, supporting resource efficiency and circular economy objectives, while the environmental impacts associated with primary steel production are addressed within the scope of this EPD.
