Formaldehyde-phenol resin for laminates (type Resil 3XXX)
Phenol-formaldehyde resins obtained in the reaction of phenol with formaldehyde in a slightly alkaline environment. The production of resins is a multi-stage process with a variable temperature-time profile and different molar ratios of substrates and catalyst. Distillation of excess water is often required. Ammonia or alkali metal hydroxides are most commonly used as catalysts. Organic solvents are added to the product with reduced water content to lower its viscosity. The resin is thermosetting and is mainly used as a binder in the production of laminates (paper and wood), including electrical insulation laminates.
