For the EPD declaration, the declared unit of matter and energy flows was referred to as: "1 m² of Billiemi "Bottarga grey" marble slab from the Bordonaro quarry, 2 cm thick, sandblasted or polished, produced by SO.F.I.L. srl."
The 'Billiemi stone' or Billiemi Grey is a tough, compact, impermeable stone with an excellent non-frost coefficient, dark grey.
Billiemi Grey is a calcareous breccia consisting of coarse angular clasts immersed in a fine matrix that may show variable colouring. Such clasts date back some 200 million years.
Its textural characteristics, the presence of fossils, differently coloured matrices and veining result in considerable variations in the appearance of Billiemi grey, even within the same slab.
The oxidation processes of pyrite, the phase responsible for the dark colouring, have led to the formation of hydroxides and iron oxides, which characterise the thin component of the rock, also introducing yellow and red colouring into the grey. These characteristics make Billiemi a very versatile material suitable for all types of processing.
