SMA mixtures are considered the bituminous mixtures with the greatest durability in wearing layers. Its mineral structure is discontinuous, the maximum aggregate sizes are in the range of 8 to 16 mm and the air void contents in the mixture are between 4 and 7% and, most characteristically, they have high bituminous binder contents (contents minimum of 5.8%). This high bitumen content is what provides the durability characteristics, but to avoid problems with the binder it is necessary to incorporate additives to the mixture that act as stabilizers (typically cellulose fibers or dust from end-of life tires, ELTs).
