Technology description including background systemAGT Melamine Faced MDF products are manufactured at the Antalya/Döşemealtı Plant as laminated wood-based board products based on HDF boards. The product structure mainly consists of an HDF substrate with decorative and/or functional paper-based surface layers applied through a lamination and pressing process. The HDF used as the main substrate for AGT Melamine Faced MDF products has a nominal density of 800 kg/m³ and is therefore representative of the company’s laminated board product system. AGT Melamine Faced MDF is produced in thicknesses between 7.5 mm and 18 mm, and the 8 mm product thickness was selected as the representative thickness for this EPD study. The Melamine Faced MDF production process starts with raw board feeding and paper feeding operations. The raw boards are transferred to the raw board line, while the decorative and/or functional papers are prepared through paper feeding and cassette turning operations. The process then continues with the laying of paper layers onto the board surface, including first, second and third paper laying steps, depending on the required product specification. The assembled board structure is then processed through pressing, where the surface layers are bonded to the HDF substrate. After pressing, the boards undergo edge cleaning, followed by quality control at the quality station. Conforming products are then cooled, stretch wrapped and transferred through quality elevators before final packaging for storage and shipment. The background system includes the production of the HDF substrate, decorative and/or functional paper-based surface layers, auxiliary materials, electricity consumption, packaging materials and waste management processes considered in the LCA model.
Scrap (recycled material) inputs contribution levelLess than 10% of the GWP-GHG results in modules A1-A3 come from scrap inputs

Data quality assessment

Description of data quality assessment and reference yearsThe EPD is based on data collected by AGT Ağaç from one production site over a one-year period starting from January 2024. The EPD type is a single product EPD for melamine faced MDF products produced at AGT Ağaç’s Antalya/Döşemealtı Plant. The end-of-life stage of the EPD was modelled using a weighted average approach based on the product’s sales destinations and Eurostat data. AGT Ağaç uses the same production technology for all melamine faced MDF products covered by this EPD. MDF-based wood materials and melamine facing materials constitute the main material inputs for melamine faced MDF production. The MDF used as the main substrate in AGT Melamine Faced MDF products is produced by AGT Ağaç at the same Antalya/Döşemealtı production site, which improves the technological and geographical representativeness of the primary data. The relevant production processes are representative of AGT Ağaç’s melamine faced MDF product range. The EPD uses background data from the Ecoinvent 3.11 database, 2024, together with EPD data for the specific primary input materials used. The quality of the relevant data used for the EPD, in terms of time, geographical, and technological representativeness, was assessed in accordance with EN 15804:2012+A2:2019, Annex E, Table E.2. The data quality was found to be mostly good and very good. No poor or very poor data were identified among the relevant data assessed.

General disclaimerThe results of the end-of-life stage (modules C1-C4) should be considered when using the results of the product stage (modules A1-A3/A1-A5 for services).
Disclaimer 1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
Disclaimer 2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties of these results are high or as there is limited experience with the indicator.

Justification for why this is representativeThe product was selected as a representative for the EPD study due to its density being both commonly used within the product range and closely aligned with the average density of the overall product portfolio. This ensures that the results of the assessment accurately reflect typical product performance across the range.
