Ownership and limitation on use of EPD
Limitations
EPDs within the same product category but published in different EPD programmes, may not be comparable. For two EPDs to be comparable, they shall be based on the same PCR (including the same first-digit version number) or be based on fully aligned PCRs or versions of PCRs; cover products with identical functions, technical performances and use (e.g. identical declared/functional units); have identical scope in terms of included life-cycle stages (unless the excluded life-cycle stage is demonstrated to be insignificant); apply identical impact assessment methods (including the same version of characterisation factors); and be valid at the time of comparison.
Ownership
The EPD Owner has the sole ownership, liability, and responsibility for the EPD.

Description of the organisation of the EPD Owner
Diasen is an Italian company operating in the architecture and sustainable building materials sector, committed to developing biophilic solutions and systems that foster more balanced and mutually beneficial relationships between humans and nature, and between built environments and living cycles. Its solutions address needs for comfort and aesthetic quality—such as thermal and acoustic insulation, surface protection, and spatial enhancement—and are designed for public construction, private architecture, and design, with particular attention to how materials interact over time with environmental factors. The company’s activities are guided by compliance with environmental regulations and by a structured approach aimed at identifying, monitoring, and reducing impacts. Since 2007, Diasen has adopted a certified Environmental Management System in accordance with ISO 14001:2015, alongside ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 standards. Diasen is also a certified B Corp®, demonstrating a commitment verified by independent third parties that attest to its social and environmental responsibility. More than 40 products have undergone LEED®, WELL®, and BREEAM® mapping to support their integration into sustainable building protocols and advanced, high-performance architectural frameworks. Operational practices include monitoring material flows to limit waste generation and increase recovery where technically feasible. Research and Development (R&D) focuses on integrating raw materials derived from industrial by-products and recoverable streams, prioritizing durability and long-term resource efficiency—key indicators of quality in relation to market outputs. Product and solution development is oriented toward improving thermal performance and reducing building energy demand. At the same time, the company places strong emphasis on indoor environmental quality and on the long-term interaction between materials, people, and ecosystems, as these aspects are integral to its mission: creating authentic spaces and environments that support human well-being, combining both functional and experiential value.

Product information
Diathonite Thermactive
| Product name | Diathonite Thermactive |
|---|---|
| Product identification | EN 998-1: Specification for mortar for masonry - Part 1: Rendering and plastering mortar (e.g., for thermal, acoustic, and dehumidifying plasters). EN 998-2: Specification for mortar for masonry - Part 2: Masonry mortar (e.g., for structural or seismic reinforcement mortars). |
| Product description | The products belonging to the Diathonite line are classified under the UN CPC Code: 37410 (Plasters). Diathonite Thermactive is a high-performance bio-EIFS blending recycled cork (0-3 mm), expanded silica, perlite, and pumice within a natural hydraulic lime (NHL 5) matrix. High-performance bio-EIFS blending recycled cork (0-3 mm), expanded silica, perlite, and pumice within a natural hydraulic lime (NHL 5) matrix. This monolithic thermal plaster provides a versatile, spray-applied shield against extreme temperatures while ensuring superior hygrometric comfort. Naturally bacteriostatic and non-combustible, it remains unaffected by humidity throughout its lifespan. A low-VOC, breathable solution for building protection, fully recyclable as an inert material. |
| Technical purpose of product | Diathonite products are cork-based thermal and acoustic insulating mortars. They are intended for both interior and exterior applications in residential, commercial, and historical buildings. Their primary technical functions include thermal insulation for energy efficiency, humidity regulation through high breathability, acoustic insulation, and sound absorption. They are designed for application on various substrates to improve building performance. |
| Manufacturing or service provision description | The manufacturing process of the Diathonite line is a batch (discontinuous) process. Raw materials are received and stored in silos, big bags, or dedicated containers. A specific bulk raw material undergoes a volume reduction process through a specialized milling stage prior to blending. All components are then mechanically mixed according to the product formula. The final dry mix is packaged in bags, palletized on wooden pallets, secured with a protective polymer hooding film, and stored as finished goods. Quality control is strictly performed throughout the process. The manufacturing line requires no water and operates as a closed-loop system: it generates no waste, and residual dust collected by the filtration system is recycled back into the production process. |

| Technology description including background system | The products considered are cork-based thermal, acoustic, dehumidifying, and structural mortars belonging to the Diathonite line. This multi-product EPD reflects a conservative worst-case scenario formulation among the product variations. The products mainly consist of granulated cork (7.72∙10ˉ² to 0.23 kg/kg), hydrated lime (0.318 to 0.431 kg/kg), and hydraulic lime (0.19 to 0.303 kg/kg). The manufacturing process is an industrial batch blending operation that requires no water and generates zero waste. Manufacturing operations are powered by an electricity mix composed of 19.10% self-produced solar energy and 80.90% from the national grid. The LCA background system relies on the Ecoinvent 3.11 database and SimaPro 10.3.0 software, covering a 'Cradle-to-gate with options' boundary (Modules A1-A3, C1-C3, and D). |

Default scenario
| Name of the default scenario | Cradle-to-gate |
|---|---|
| Description of the default scenario | The system boundary of this EPD follows a 'Cradle-to-gate with options' approach, covering the product stage (Modules A1-A3), the end-of-life stage (Modules C1-C3), and the benefits and loads beyond the system boundary (Module D). Construction stage (A4-A5) and Use stage (B1-B7) modules are omitted. |
Module C: End-of-life
| Explanatory name of the default scenario in module C | Standard Scenario |
|---|---|
| Brief description of the default scenario in module C | Mixed scenario including material recovery and disposal according to PCR rules |
| Description of the default scenario in module C | The default end-of-life scenario is modelled in accordance with the standard scenarios provided by the core Product Category Rules (PCR 2019:14). After building deconstruction (Module C1), the generated mortar waste is transported to treatment facilities (Module C2). The scenario accounts for both the potential impacts of waste processing for material recycling (Module C3) and the impacts associated with final disposal or landfilling (Module C4), evaluated according to standard indicators. |
Module D: Beyond product life cycle
| Explanatory name of the default scenario in module D | Inert material reuse |
|---|---|
| Brief description of the default scenario in module D | Benefits from the recycling of inert materials displacing virgin gravel aggregates |
| Description of the default scenario in module D | The net environmental benefits in Module D are calculated assuming that 100% of the inert waste generated during building deconstruction undergoes mechanical sorting and crushing. In accordance with the reference LCA study parameters, the recycled mortar achieves a 50% technical quality factor compared to primary materials, effectively displacing 0.60 kg of natural gravel per kg of product |
