Impregnated pinewood

The declared product is impregnated pinewood manufactured from locally sourced pine species (Pinus tecunumanii, Pinus caribea, Pinus oocarpa, and Pinus maximinoi) originating exclusively from privately owned forest plantations in Guatemala. All wood is harvested from plantations managed under permits and operating licenses issued by the competent national authorities, including the National Forest Institute (INAB), the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), and the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP), ensuring legal origin, traceability, and compliance with national forest management and environmental regulations. The pinewood is sawn and dried to 12% moisture content under ambient conditions, and pressure-cured with chromated copper arsenate (CCA). Pressure-treated pinewood is lumber that has undergone a pressurization treatment to increase durability and prevent decay, mold, insects, and water damage. This treatment utilizes a depressurized holding tank to remove excess air from the wood and then replaces it with preservatives and water. The treated wood is commonly used for several outdoor applications like residential decks, wooden playground equipment, picnic tables, gazebos, bridges, docks, marinas, utility poles, fences, furniture and house construction. All products are sold locally to national clients. Due to various end-use possibilities, the expected service life is not declared in this EPD.

At the building level, impregnated pinewood primarily functions as a durable construction material for exterior and moisture-exposed applications (inground or outdoor), providing structural support, dimensional stability, and resistance to biological degradation. Its intended uses include decking systems, fences, pergolas, playground equipment, light load-bearing elements, and ancillary structures where prolonged exposure to weather and humidity is expected. By extending service life and reducing the need for frequent replacement or maintenance, the product can positively influence the operational phase of the building or construction work by limiting material turnover and associated maintenance activities. The product does not require operational energy or water during use and therefore has no direct influence on operational energy demand of the building. Restrictions on use apply in accordance with national building codes and safety regulations, particularly regarding applications involving direct human contact or structural performance requirements, and the product is not intended for primary load-bearing structural systems unless specifically designed and verified at the project level.
