Professional cleaning services for passenger trains

Functional Unit

by: 31 August 2018, 3:10:58 PM (GMT +1)

Good morning,
I would like to have a clarification regarding the functional unit of this PCR.

I don't understand how to assess the average coach (by train type) from the inventory data.

For example: let's suppose that "CC" is the generic consumption referred to the cleaning of a regional train characterized by: 3 "one-floor" coaches + 5 "two-floors" coaches.
To allocate "CC" to the functional unit, I would use the formula: "CC"/N. But how to consider N?
Does it represent the number of total coaches (in the example N=3+5=8)?
Or is it a parameter estimated as a function of the physical characteristics of the types of coaches examined (e.g. horizontal surfaces, number of sessions, etc.)? If so, what is the calculation methodology?

Thanks

Dear Sir, the approach you used in your example (arithmetic average) is in line with the rules reported in PCR 3.1 (Functional unit), in particular “The results shall be referred to a representative average passenger coach for the professional cleaning service”. The approach used have to be reported in the EPD in order to give appropriate considerations regarding representativeness and relevance of the selected coach used as functional unit.
I take this opportunity to invite you to propose possible improvement regarding this point during the next revision of the PCR.

Kind regards. Gian Franco Graziano
