New company with EPD Process Certification

EPD Process Certification

The latest company to get an EPD Process Certification is Fater S.p.A., meaning that their internal processes to produce EPDs have been quality assured by an external certification body. They recently published their first EPD in the International EPD® System for breathable shaped diapers.

The EPD Process Certification is one of the features of the International EPD® System to allow companies to make the process to create EPDs more efficient and enable the creation of EPDs at a large scale.

Submit your abstracts regarding LCA, EPD and Public Procurement for LCM 2017 (extended deadline)

LCM 2017

The Secretariat will be represented as one of the chairs at a session at the LCM 2017 conference held in Luxembourg in September 2017. The topic of the session will be:

Using LCA and EPD in Public Procurement within the construction section

Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) have long been pointed to as tools to be used in green public procurement (GPP), but doing so in practice is challenging. How can such information be requested without breaking some of the general principles for public procurement, for example non-discrimination and transparency? EPDs are now widely used within the construction sector to provide environmental information; however using EPDs in GPP is still not common and there is a need to share experiences and practices. This session should include six shorter presentations providing different perspectives on this issue and feature a panel discussion.

The deadline for abstracts is open until January 15th. For more information and to submit an abstract, see the LCM 2017 website.

Secretariat open during most of December holidays

The EPD International Secretariat will remain open during most of the December holidays 2016.

Great interest for the upcoming EPD International Stakeholder Conference

There has been a great interest for the 4th EPD International Stakeholder Conference. Even after extending the maximum number of participants, the event is now fully booked.

It is still possible to sign up to be added to the waiting list for the event using the link on this page. We encourage you not book any travel, etc., until you have received a confirmation e-mail that you have been confirmed for the event.

"I am very happy to see this great interest for this year's conference. This really shows the growing interest for communicating life-cycle based information of products with EPD in Italy and around Europe", says Kristian Jelse, project manager at the Secretariat.

The 2016 EPD International Stakeholder Conference will take place in Milan, Italy and feature presentations and discussions focused on two main themes: EPD and Green Public Procurement and EPD and the European Product Environmental Footprint Initiative.

LEED v4 supercedes older version

As of 2016-10-31, version 4 of LEED is be the only version of the building certification scheme in which to register a new project. Since its launch in November 2013, a transition period has been running when both the older and newer versions of the scheme have been possible to use.

LEED v4 is relevant to EPD owners as it features two credits related to having product-specific declarations such as EPDs available and that demonstrates and impact reduction compared to an industry average.

According to the US Green Buliding Council, the scheme operators, these credits aim to promote: "the use of products and materials for which life-cycle information is available and that have environmentally, economically, and socially preferable life-cycle impacts".

Call for scientific papers related to LCA and Circular Economy

Call for papers

In an upcoming special issue in the scientific Journal of Engineering, the theme will be “Life Cycle Assessment Approach Applied to Circular Economy”. The guest editors Professor M. Gallo, A. Del Borghi. R. Carlsson and L. Arcioni would like to invite the research community working with EPDs and LCA to submit their papers, as EPD may be considered as a valuable tool to support strategies for circular economy.

According to the editors, the expected contributions should aim to address how the practices in industrial engineering and Life Cycle Management could evolve in the context of circular economy. The deadline of submission of manuscripts is 2017-03-03.

EPD workshop held in Istanbul

EPD workshop

EPD Turkey arranged a side-event – an EPD workshop – in conjunction with the annual SBE16 Conference in Istanbul on October 13-15 entitled “Smart Metropoles – Integrated Solution for Sustainable and Smart Buildings and Cities”. EPD Turkey is the regional hub of the International EPD® System in Turkey.

The EPD workshop gathered some 50 participants representing different sectors of the building society in Turkey. The workshop was arranged with a panel initially giving their views on the value of EPDs in a broad market perspective. Panel members were:

  • İlker Kahraman, EPD Turkey
  • Selcuk Özdil, Turkish Green Building Council
  • Nils Larsson, ISBE
  • Hüdai Kara, Metsims Sustainability
  • Sven-Olof Ryding, International EPD® System

The workshop participants were very active in the following discussion session in plenum. Questions encompassed a variety of interesting subjects - from detailed aspects with regard to LCA methodologies focusing specifically on energy-related calculations to the overall market influence and acceptance of the increasing number of EPDs for different building products that now appear on the market.

At the end of the workshop EPD Turkey had arranged a ceremony with handing-over EPD certificates to Turkish companies that had registered EPDs in the International EPD® System via EPD Turkey.

For more information about the event please contact Dr. İlker Kahraman at EPD Turkey.
