Registration open: 8th EPD International Stakeholder Conference

EPD International Stakeholder Conference

We are very much looking forward to e-connect with you on November 10, 2020, during one of our two identical online Annual Stakeholder Conference. Due to COVID-19 we can unfortunately not meet-up in Slovenia this year as planned, but we are looking forward to meeting up with you online! The event is expected to gather EPD stakeholders from industry, academia and other sectors for a chance to learn about the latest developments in the world of Environmental Product Declarations.

The theme of the event is “Access for all - the world needs credible, digital and harmonized environmental performance data”.

The topics of the event will be:

  • Credible data: A strong EPD brand and third-party verified environmental performance data are key when decisions require a life cycle perspective.
  • Digital solutions: The product-specific information in an EPD is increasingly used when calculating the environmental performance of various items.
  • Harmonisation on all levels: Finding acceptance of EPDs by working on global standardisation with public and private actors.

Extended validity period for PCR 2012:01 and sub-PCRs following EN 15804:2012+A1:2013

EPD International AB decided to extend the validity period for our PCR 2012:01 Construction products and construction services and all associated sub-PCRs that follow the old version of EN 15804 (EN 15804:2012+A1:2013) until 2021-12-31. This to secure the smooth transition to the new version of EN 15804 (EN 15804:2012+A2:2019).

However, as mentioned in the previous post, we strongly recommend organisations registering new EPDs to follow our new construction product PCR (PCR 2019:14) and associated complementary PCRs (c-PCRs) that follow the updated EN15804 standard.

The validity period of EPDs based on PCRs that follow the old EN 15804 (A1) remains five years.

Bombardier the first to publish an Environmental Product Declaration for a business aircraft

Bombardier Aviation and the International EPD® System today announced the first publication of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for business aviation, the Global 7500 aircraft.

The aircraft EPD is third party verified and complies with the globally accepted ISO standard, ISO 14025 and related, for type III environmental declarations. It discloses fully transparent environmental information about the product’s life cycle. This includes for example CO2 emissions, noise, water consumption and other key environmental impact indicators.

“We are proud to collaborate with Bombardier in its effort to provide full transparency about the environmental performance of its Global 7500 aircraft from a life cycle perspective. With the publication of the first business jet EPD in our system, Bombardier is striving to provide customers and stakeholders with the full environmental picture,” says Sebastiaan Stiller, Director Business, The International EPD® System.

“We are thrilled to offer a comprehensive environmental footprint and performance overview of the Global 7500 aircraft throughout its life cycle. By making this information available to our stakeholders, including operators, this EPD also supports the business aviation industry’s broader goals to mitigating its impact on climate change,” says David Coleal, President at Bombardier Aviation.

New PCR Partnership Programme established

Harmonization of Product Category Rules (PCR) is at the heart of meeting EU and global market expectations to make lifecycle-based environmental performance data of manufacturers’ products and services comparable.

EPD International AB therefore now calls for deep collaboration between and the coordination of the PCR development processes amongst EPD Programme Operators (EPD POs) and PCR developers in a market-driven PCR Partnership Programme (PPP). This new PPP initiative is especially necessary when EPD POs shall offer regularly updated and harmonised PCR information on a global scale to their markets.

The overall objectives of this PPP are to:

  • initiate constructive forms of co-operations between POs leading to full consistency of PCR- and EPD work according to ISO 14025 and ISO/TS 14027
  • minimize misuse and market failure of PCR and EPD
  • avoid proliferation of PCRs in the same product category
  • gain market acceptance for effective efforts to harmonize PCR

Please click here to get detailed information about the PPP and to discuss how we can join forces.

Clarification regarding the use of normalization within EPDs

Normalization may be a powerful and useful instrument inside an LCA study, but its results cannot be reported in an EPD. This is because an EPD shall not, according to the General Programme Instructions, include any rating or judgements, which are inherent parts of normalization.

The position of the International EPD System on normalization is further clarified here: www.environdec.com/The-International-EPD-System/General-Programme-Instructions/Guidance-on-interpretation-of-programme-instructions.

New upcoming sunset date for PCRs following old EN15804:2012 A1

EPD International AB has received requests regarding the validity for the use of PCRs and complimentary PCRs (c-PCRs) according to the old EN15804:2012 A1 (i.e. PCR 2012:01).

As founding member of the ECO Platform, we plan to adopt an upcoming recommendation from the ECO Platform to its EPD programme members on uniformly handling the transition period to the new version of the standard of EN15804:2019 A2 as well as official sunset dates on which the old version shall no longer be used.

We expect to be able to communicate details from the recommendation in May/June this year. Being one of the first programme operators on the market offering PCRs following the new EN15804:2019 A2, we will ensure to align the sunset dates for any PCRs and c-PCRs according to the old EN15804:2012 A1 to secure a smooth transition. We therefore expect a prolongment of the validity date of those PCRs and c-PCRs beyond 2020-09-01.

Nevertheless, we strongly recommend organisations who start their EPD development to follow our PCRs that follow the new EN15804:2019 A2 standard already today.

Updated clarification regarding indicators for use of resources and waste

Updated clarification regarding indicators for use of resources and waste

The indicators for use of resources and waste shall account for resource used and waste produced along the whole life cycle of the declared product (upstream, core and downstream processes). They are the result of the life cycle inventory and represent net flows of resources and waste crossing the system boundaries. The amount of wastes and the destination shall, therefore, be declared as outflows from the system only when the waste treatment process is not included within the system boundaries.

The updated clarification is available on this page (scroll down to headline two) and will be added to future revisions of the General Programme Instructions: www.environdec.com/The-International-EPD-System/General-Programme-Instructions/Guidance-on-interpretation-of-programme-instructions
