PCR for construction products published based on the new EN 15804

New PCR for construction products

We are proud to announce the publication of new Product Category Rules (PCR) for construction products, PCR 2019:14. The PCR is based on the updated European standard for EPDs of construction products, EN 15804, which was launched in 2019. The International EPD® System is, to our knowledge, the first EPD programme to issue a PCR based on the updated EN 15804.

Compared to the old version, the new PCR has different requirements in terms of allowed scopes, required indicators and allocation procedures, among others. The PCR provides a link between the requirements in the General Programme Instructions of the International EPD® System and the new EN 15804. It is also meant to provide a basis for EPDs based on ISO 21930:2017 if additional requirements are met.

The first six complementary PCRs are also published, with specific guidance regarding cement and building lime, ceramic tiles, concrete and concrete elements, floor covering, thermal insulation, and wood products used for construction. Complementary PCRs covering more product categories will be published over time.

The old PCR for Construction products, PCR 2012:01, will be valid until 2020-09-01 to enable EPD owners and EPD users to adapt to the new standard.

Read more and see the new PCR here: www.environdec.com/PCR/Detail/?Pcr=14759

PCRs available for open consultation

Arable and vegetable crops, cosmetics, seats and finished bovine leather

Product Category Rules (PCR) are documents that provide rules, requirements, and guidelines for developing an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for a specific product category. They are used as complements to the programme instructions, e.g. in terms of calculation rules, scenarios, and EPD contents. A PCR should enable different practitioners using the PCR to generate consistent results when assessing products of the same product category.

The Product Category Rule (PCR) for Arable and Vegetable crops is new and aimed at replacing two previous PCRs, 2013:05 (Arable crops) and 2011:20 (Vegetables). The PCR is available for open consultation until 2020-01-17.

Please find more information about the consultation here.

Following PCRs are now being updated and are also open for consultation

Upcoming webinar: How to create machine-readable EPDs

From pdf to xml

The market shows a growing demand and interest for machine-readable EPD information. Since more than one year, the International EPD® System allows for the possibility to adapt the information given to specific user needs and market applications by introducing the concept of “machine-readable EPDs”.

Machine-readable EPD-information is stored in a file format in a separate database hosted by the International EPD® System that can be used for different applications and will open new ways to make use of the communication of the environmental performance of products.

Learn more about machine-readable EPD information and how to create machine-readable EPDs in a free online webinar:

Time: Thursday, September, 19, 2 pm-3.30pm (CEST)

Launch of the new website indata.network

As one of the members of the InData working group, we are pleased to announce the launch of a new website for a European sustainability data hub of construction products, www.indata.network.

The Working Group `International Open Data Network for Sustainable Building` (InData) originated from growing interest in structuring and using information from Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for sustainable building. Together with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), EPDs are a strong instrument for sustainable development for homes and buildings.

The newly developed website will work as a platform to exchange experience and create a joint international information node for the construction sector. To support and disseminate information on sustainable buildings the InData website will share news about meetings, international conferences, publications and the growing InData network.

The public (research) institutions, program operators and experts who participate in InData aim to establish an online based open data network for EPD and generic data according to international standards. Therefore InData formulated a Decalogue that includes among others a uniform data format and common quality rules.
In this project phase the website offers information about the members of InData and news about the working group. The next milestone for InData is the release of the joint data network.
