AKU Italia registers first EPD for footwear

Bellamont Plus EPD

AKU Italia has become the first company to register the first EPD® of footwear in the International EPD® System. The EPD declares the environmental impacts of one pair of Bellamont Plus over their life cycle including:

  • Preparation of the raw and semi-finished materials (leather, fabrics, insoles, laces, etc.)
  • Production of the shoe (cutting, sewing, assembly, etc.)
  • Distribution, use and end-of-life

The EPD® has undergone third party verification by RINA Services, and checked against the Product Category Rules (PCR) for leather footwear. The EPD was produced by Aequilibria di Pernigotti Daniele.

First EPD® registration from Bulgaria in the International EPD® System

EPD map

ETEM Bulgaria S.A. has become the first company to register Environmental Product Declarations from Bulgaria in the International EPD® System. The EPDs transparently declares the environmental impacts of aluminium profiles based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The EPD was verified by approved independent verifier Vladimír Kočí.

With the addition of an EPD from Bulgaria, there are now EPDs registered in 37 countries in the International EPD® System.

The brochure Introducing the International EPD®System, has now been translated into Spanish, German and Italian is now available for download. The folder describes the basic principles of Environmental Product Declarations and the International EPD® System. The brochure is already available in English, Swedish and Chinese.

ECO Platform formulates an updated strategy

ECO Platform logotype

At the board meeting last week, the ECO Platform decided on an updated strategy for the year to come. The new mission statement of ECO Platform is:

To contribute to and support the provision of scientifically-sound, quality-assured and verified information of a European-wide accepted core-EPD for construction products by being widely visible and recognized as the benchmark for EPD Programme Operators in Europe.

The International EPD® System is a founding member of the ECO Platform to collaborate with other programme operators for alignment with EN 15804. The International EPD® System is one of the approved programmes to use the ECO Platform logotype on its EPDs for construction products compliant with EN 15804.

Presentation from the 5th EPD International Stakeholder Conference now available

Stakeholder conference

The 5th EPD International Stakeholder Conference was held on September 20th in London, UK. The conference welcomed more than 50 EPD stakeholders from 12 countries.

This year's presentations and panel discussions focused on two main themes:

Some key items that were discussed were:
The new version of the General Programme Instructions were officially launched.
The idea of “net of PCRs” was introduced for the food sector to increase coordination of methodological issues across PCRs.

Interesting EPD case studies were presented by companies such as Coop Italia, Barilla and BYK Chemie.
Important feedback was given on what the International EPD System should focus on going forward. Summarized by Massimo Marino, chairman of the Technical Committee, they were realiability, governance, harmonization between different systems and communication.

Two new regional hubs launched in the global network of the International EPD® System

Brazil and India

At the 5th EPD International Stakeholder Conference in London on September 20, the International EPD® System announced the most recent expansion of its global network: the EPD India Hub and the EPD Brazil Hub (to complement EPD Latin American Hub already established in Mexico and Chile).

The new regional hubs will provide local support and promote the use of EPDs in their regions. The hubs will also be responsible for registration of EPDs into the International EPD® System library at www.environdec.com for companies in these two countries.

“The interest for EPDs is growing globally, and we are very happy to include new regional partners in our global collaboration, who will help to make EPDs more accepted and used as an important vehicle on a global market,” says Kristian Jelse, Programme manager of the International EPD® System.

The Indian and the Brazilian hubs are the latest in a group of regional hubs of the International EPD® System, which also includes New Zealand and Australia (Australasian EPD Programme), Chile and Mexico (EPD Latin America) and Turkey (EPD Turkey), The International Secretariat with offices in Sweden and a helpdesk in China handle EPD registration and helpdesk requests for all other countries.

Companies, LCA consultants, certification bodies or other stakeholders in India and Brazil are welcome to contact the regional hubs or the EPD International Secretariat for further information.

Certification body in Mexico accredited for EPD verification

Organismo Nacional de Normalización y Certificación de la Construcción y Edificación, SC (ONNCCE) has become the first Mexican certification body to become accredited to perform EPD verifications and to offer such services connected to the International EPD® System. The accreditation was performed by entidad mexicana de acreditación, a.c. (EMA). ONNCCE is the Mexican standards and certification body for the construction sector.

Dr. Nydia Suppen, co-director of the from EPD Latin America, the regional hub of the International EPD® System “commends ONNCE for their efforts in promoting the development of high-quality and open EPDs and their commitment to the capacity building activities with the construction sector”, while Claudia Peña comments that 

"It is of great importance for organizations such as EMA in Latin America, to actively participate in the process of generating critical mass of accredited verifiers, as they will give greater support to the EPD dissemination, educational and implementation activities promoted by the Latin American hub of the International EPD System."

In addition to the accredited certification bodies, companies developing EPDs have the choice to use individual verifiers listed on this page.

Dani pioneers EPD Process Certification in the tanning industry

Dani EPD

Dani S.p.A. has become the latest company to get an EPD Process Certification, meaning that their internal processes to produce EPDs have been quality assured by an external certification body.

Based on the EPD Process Certificaiton, Dani has published an EPD for Dani leather - Box land, used for furnishings, footwear and leather products.

7th InData meeting held in Norway

The 7th meeting of the InData working group was held in Norway in June. The Secretariat joined the meeting as part of its ongoing pilot to test making EPDs available in machine-readable format, and to contribute to international harmonization of data formats and data quality. The other participants came from Norway, Germany and Spain.

The topic of machine-readable EPDs and their applications will be one of the main themes of this year's EPD International Stakeholder Conference on September 20th in London. The presentations will include information about InData, using EPDs in BIM and using EPDs in building certification schemes.
